What is 4-H?

4-H is an youth educational organization sponsored by West Virginia University Extension Service, in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture and the individual counties in West Virginia.

4-H is represented by a green four-leaf clover with a white letter H on each of the leaves. The “Hs” represent the fourfold development of Head, Heart, Hands, and Health.

The 4-H Pledge is:
I pledge my Head to clearer thinking,
my Heart to greater loyalty,
my Hands to larger service,
and my Health to better living for my club, my community, my country, and my world.

What activities does 4-H offer?

On a local level 4-H offers community clubs, specialty clubs, cloverbud clubs, county camp(s), club outings, Achievement Banquet, and more! In 4-H youth socialize, learn, and develop life skills in a safe, educational atmosphere.

How can my child join 4-H?

Any child between the ages of 5 and 21 can join 4-H by calling or sending e-mail to the Brooke County Extension Office.

What is the Cloverbud program?

The 4-H Cloverbud program is for youth ages 5-8 years old in grades K-2. Age-appropriate curriculum is available through the Extension Office.

Cloverbuds may show projects at a county fair and are awarded a participation ribbon. Cloverbuds may not participate in livestock shows as per WVU Extension Service guidelines.

To be eligible for Cloverbuds, a child must turn 5 years old during the 4-H year (October 1 to September 30) and be in kindergarten.

Where can I find info about the “This is 4-H” project?

Both the National 4-H Headquarters and the National 4-H Council websites are a wealth of basic information about the 4-H program in the United States. For information about 4-H in West Virginia, consult the state 4-H website.

What are the 4-H Cloverbud age requirements?

4-H Cloverbuds is a program for youth (ages 5 to 8) in kindergarten through the second grade. To be eligible for Cloverbuds, a child must turn five years old during the 4-H year (October 1 to September 30) and be enrolled in kindergarten.

What are the 4-H age requirements?

A boy or girl can join when he/she is in at least the third grade and/or 9 years of age and is not older than 21.

Example, a child can join 4-H if he/she is 8 years of age and will reach his/her 9th birthday during the current 4-H club year and will not be eligible for membership if he/she reaches his/her 21st birthday on or before December 31 of the current 4-H year (October 1 to September 30).

Note: Any individual of 4-H age may enroll in and carry 4-H membership in only one state and one county.
